When selecting inductors, engineers have to ensure the component can handle the maximum peak current their circuit generates (figure 1). Understanding the peak-current handling capability of inductors can help identify opportunities to reduce the size of an inductor further. However, there are times the increase in frequency is limited. Design engineers have been able to reduce the size of inductors and transformers by increasing the magnetic components' operating frequencies. This ultimately means that they will make an attempt to reduce the size of the power supplies' inductors and transformers. As high-tech electronic products and their power supplies continue to shrink in size, design engineers should look closely at the peak-current handling capability of power inductors.ĭesign engineers are called upon on a daily basis to reduce the size of electronic products.
